I’ve loved reading since I was little and I would tear through Magic Tree House books in one sitting. Does anyone else remember those?! So good. Anyways, I’ve always been one to swoon over words and there a few things I love more than a good book.
I find such raw power in words and fully romanticize the art of story telling. I love the way words can be strung together to paint a picture and their ability to pull you into a story so that you feel like you are there.
Reading has also been a huge help in my anxiety. When I read before I go to sleep I fall asleep much faster and wake up feeling much more well rested. Winning!
I’ve also recently gotten an old school library card! Books were taking up way too much space in my wallet and now I found myself reading more books than ever because they’re so easy to go pick up! My library offers an amazing app called Libby, which you can download on your phone to read audiobooks for free. If you’re an audio book lover you know that they’re not cheap to purchase, so check if your local library supports the app.
Today I’m sharing a few books that I’ve read and loved recently. They are a mix of fiction, memoir, poetry and self-help. Let me know if you read and loved any of these books or let me know what I should read next in the comments.
Happy reading!
I love historical fiction. Jojo Moyes switches back between the first World War and present day, merging the stories of two women into one. It has romance, drama, history and pain, and is sure to tug at your heart strings.
2. Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis
This book is written from the firsthand account of J.D. Vance, a “hillbilly” from Ohio. He discusses the trials and tribulations of the people from Appalachia and the often toxic culture he was brought up with. It is extremely interesting and thought-provoking.
As we all know, Mindy Kaling is hilarious. This book will make you laugh and make you think. Kaling empowers women and makes you believe in yourself. It will also make you want to watch The Office if you’re anything like me.
Okay, I realize this isn’t a new one and that you’ve probably already seen the movie, but the book is so much better! I listened to this on audio book and the different readers’ accents made it ten times better. Kathryn Stockett did such an impeccable job with this one.
5. This Will Only Hurt a Little
Busy Philipps doesn’t hold back in her memoir. She’s extremely open and vulnerable on her past experiences in show business and the trauma she’s faced throughout her life. I’m a sucker for honest writing so I really enjoyed this one.
6. Material Girl Mystical World
I am certainly nowhere near a pro, but I do enjoy learning about astrology. I find that my chart and zodiac sign are typically pretty spot on for me. I think learning about the planets and universe is fun and Ruby Warrington makes it really easy to understand.
If you’re someone who has struggled with diet culture or dieting, this is such a great book to read. It breaks down how to let go of the negative messages of diet culture and the hurtful impact it has on us. It breaks down how to eat intuitively like you did as a child before you were aware of trends like keto, low carb, intermittent fasting, etc. R.D.s Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch give you the tools you need to get back to power eating “normally.”
8. Shame is an Ocean I Swim Across
This book of poems by Mary Lambert is brutally honest and raw. It can be deep and dark, chronicling both love and terrible trauma. Her knack for story telling is inspiring, but please be mindful that this book discusses abuse and may be triggering for some.
Ellie Kemper is just so cute. This book is an easy read that is sure to make you laugh. She is funny, smart and kind. I loved learning about her journey into show business.
I listened to this book on audio and was instantly hooked! This fictional thriller is set during a wedding on Nantucket. Set aside some time for this one because you’ll have a hard time putting it down!
I hope you enjoy this list! Let me know if you have any to add 🙂
Sending love!
