Lately I have been trying to add more healthy fats into my diet. Mainstream diets often try to scare us away from fats when in reality they are a critical element in a healthy, well-balanced diet. This is great news for me since I love healthy fats. 😉 Hello, avocado, coconut oil, nuts, nut butters and organic bacon. Sign me up!
Some of the amazing benefits from fats are stronger brain function, better cholesterol levels and reduced risk of heart disease. Healthy fats also build a stronger immune system, enhance skin and eye health, improve digestion, stabilize blood sugar and keep us satiated. Is it just me or does that make you want to run and take a spoon into some almond butter!?
Since I’ve been increasing my healthy fat intake, I have cut down on snacking. When I incorporate lots of healthy fats into my meals, I feel much more satisfied and don’t feel the need to graze on snacks like I normally do. I also love smoothies, so this recipe has been a regular staple in my routine along with my creamy sweet potato fall smoothie. This smoothie packs a ton of nutrients with healthy fats and greens, plus it’s super yummy! ☺
The ingredients:
– 1/3 of an avocado
– 1 T coconut oil (can sub MCT oil)
– 2 handfuls of spinach
– dash of cinnamon
– 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder (can sub for chocolate)
– 1-1 ½ cup of almond milk
– 3-4 ice cubes (can add more depending on your preferred consistency)
If you prefer other greens or fats like kale or almond butter — change it up. If you’re feeling wild and craving fruit, add 1/4 cup of blueberries or your favorite fruit! I always add some yummy toppings, which is a great way to add flavor and more nutrients. I topped this one with some almond butter, unsweetened coconut flakes, chia seeds and gluten-free granola. I love adding a crunch to my smoothies so toppings are a no brainer for me. 🙂 You can also top with some diced fruit, nuts, seeds or cacao nibs. Whatever you fancy!
