Hello, hello! I am writing this from sunny California where I’ll be for the week for my new job. California is beautiful and I am excited to be back but travel sure can be tiring! It was so hard not to hit snooze on a Monday morning but I had to make it to my 7 a.m. flight.
I try to enjoy travel, even for work, as much as I can, but it can be a little challenging to keep up with healthy habits. My mindset for traveling is to be flexible and have fun, but keep up with rituals that make me feel good! For me, that means drinking water, squeezing in a workout/yoga, taking supplements, meditating and making sure I eat a few green things 🙂
Flying is SO dehydrating and can impact digestion, mood and more. I always pack my reusable water bottle and fill it up first thing after I get through security! Thankfully almost every airport has a refillable water station because those shot glass size glasses of water on flights are not enough! I drink water before, during and after my flight to ensure I’m hydrated so I typically try to find an aisle seat haha.
I love yoga and exercise — they help me feel my best mentally and help manage my anxiety. More on that here. When I’m on vacation, my workouts are pretty relaxed and usually look like walking/exploring and squeezing in some yoga or a workout when my body is asking for it. While I’m traveling for work, I pack my yoga mat and take advantage of the hotel gym.During work travel, I like to practice/workout in the morning before a long day of sitting at a desk or in meetings. Even when I’m short on time, I like to squeeze in 15-30 minutes to start my day. It helps my energy levels through the day and I’m less fidgety since I already spent some time moving my body.
I keep up with my supplements, collagen and magnesium. I packed these in small containers but they both come in individual travel packs that are easy to take on the road! I take collagen to support my joints, digestion, and hair/skin/nails. My nails have never looked better since I started taking collagen over a year ago. I’ve wrote about the magnesium supplement Calm here. It’s great for anxiety, bone health and digestion. These supplements work for me but always consult your doctor 🙂
Meditation makes me a better person — no doubt about it! I’m more relaxed, focused, patient and at ease. It’s important to me to take some time, even if it’s just five minutes, to sit in silence or focus on deep breathing. I love using the Calm app when my mind feels restless so I can tune into a guided meditation.
Eat your veggies AND enjoy local food and treats. If you’re traveling, you have to try the local delicacies! I don’t believe in deprivation or “cheat days.” I believe in eating what your body is craving, which for a lot of us is both yummy treats and fruits and veggies. Our bodies are smart and know what we need. Whether it’s starting dinner with a salad or grabbing some fresh fruit as a snack, I like to think about adding healthy food to help my digestion and skin. It doesn’t mean I’m taking away “unhealthy” food — just making sure I’m getting some good ‘ole fruits and veggies as well. This week, I’m enjoying smoothie bowls so I can squeeze in extra veggies at breakfast.
My trips are focused on enjoyment — not fitness or needing to eat “healthy” at every meal. Since I enjoy treats at any time, I don’t feel the need to go crazy when I’m away, which allows me to enjoy everything in moderation. I exercise/practice yoga and meditate so I feel good mentally and am able to make the best of my trip.
What are your favorite travel tips? What makes you feel your best while traveling?
Have an awesome week!
